Forever Learning, Forever Growing – Be Agile

Updated: Mar 19, 2022

The beginning of the year did not start out well for me, but I won’t bore you with details. All I will say is I’ve been bed-ridden for almost a month and I’ve experienced physical, mental and emotional pain in ways I never thought I would. But one thing I learned in the military that I apply to every day of my life is ‘learn something from your challenges. Every moment is a learning experience, every bump in the road tests your stability. I couldn’t sit up for three-weeks, so I had to learn how to maneuver from parallel to upright without causing further damage. I made it a point to spend more time with my son when he got home from school (which he didn’t want to really do because…teenagers). As I started to regain my range of motion, I figured out how to (correctly) use crutches. I started to try to keep up with what was going on at work and started reviewing what I had missed. Something clicked with what I was going through at home and what we were doing at GCA…an Agile mindset.

A coworker mentioned she had taken a CSM course through Agile For Growth(thanks Sabah). Seeing that we had been doing a lot revisiting of definitions, goals and processes, I figured this would not only be a good time to get some guidance, but a way to get my groove back. I’ve been to a lot of different LEAN, pragmatic, agile and Scrum-based workshops and courses. Most of them are consistent in theory: “reduce waste and improve team effectiveness”. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting to see much difference in this course. But Sabah had been in the previous Scrum course with me, so I trusted her judgement. One thing that made this course stand out was its “learn by doing” methodology of applying of the Scrum framework through the entirety of course. I hadn’t been through another course that actually did theory in practice this way. Kamlesh Ravlani was a great instructor and took the time to reinforce the Scrum Values over our sessions. It was an exercise in simplicity and EVERYONE’S questions were answered THOROUGHLY. I’d recommend this course and this company to anyone interested in Agile frameworks.

Resiliency is all about overcoming obstacles and I’m ready to bounce back!
